“I have always explored a variety of materials and different techniques: modeled and cast clay, resins and fiberglass, Wax for bronze, and papier-mâché. My work, inspired by the female form has been fairly literal, drawing on years of work with models and teachers. I have been wanting to develop something different and so used the TAIP grant to explore working with wood and to deviate from literal forms to create pieces that are more abstract and fanciful. I discovered by gluing small pieces of wood, cutting, carving and re-gluing additional pieces, filling gaps and rearranging I could develop work through the process in a fluid manner that is similar to the processes of working with clay or wax.”
“My childhood was filled with art, my father, a commercial artist, my mother unfulfilled doctor, provided opportunities for creative experiences as early as kindergarten. I had amazing mentors, and also the cultural venues of New York City to freely explore, and provide an escape from the ostracism of Junior High. I experienced the creative milieu and excitement of the rich cultural environment and acceptance of the High School of Music and Art and later the Art Students League and sculptor Chaim Gross. Dreams of a creative career were shattered I made my living in elementary education where I decorated playgrounds, produced handmade learning games, and displays. Living in Los Angeles I raised my own family, while continuing art making, finally received my MFA. I participated in art activities in LA but also began spending time in China where the culture and International friendships allowed for new perspectives and opportunities.”
